Jump Over the Hacks – Publish Your Books and Make Money Fast
Kindle Direct Publishing, or KDP for short, could be the most valuable, the easiest, and the fastest way for you to self-publish your book in electronic (ebook) style. For most authors, figuring out how to get their books out to the public has a steep learning curve attached. I’m not saying digital publishing is simple, but it doesn’t have to be painful, and rest assured, you are not alone. Amazon is focusing on making it easy and inexpensive for any author to publish their book online or in print.
If you have a book or two on your desk that just cries out to be in front of readers but you break out in hives at the thought of formatting those works of art, check the links I’ve harvested for you.
- There’s a brand new simplified publishing tutorial for authors wishing to access Amazon’s KDP system. This is self-explanatory and should have you up and running in no time. Once you publish your book, set up an author page at Amazon – it’s free and if well-written, is a terrific tool for encouraging readers to buy.
- If, like me, you’re more apt to learn from visuals, here’s a video tutorial that should make your next career step a piece of cake.
- My third gift to you is a link to one of the most savvy digital authors/publishers I know of. This guy, David Gaughran, has documented his journey to ebook author success from day one to the present. If you need a crash course in how to succeed in publishing without going down in flames, this is where to get great info.
Once you get your book or books published on Amazon, digitally I mean, you can explore Amazon’s print options, and at the same time, you’ll want to consider sites like Smashwords for other ways to get your books out there. I encourage you to work through Amazon first, whether you object to their juggernaut status or not, if you really want to develop readership and make money as an author. The other sites are tough to learn, buggy to work within, and limited in their scope and reach. Then read Gaughran’s book, Let’s Get Digital, to learn the coolest strategies for building your authoring empire.
For now, don’t worry about the politics of which publishing corporation is winning or losing, who is ahead in the market place, and who has the most universal clout. Your biggest concern, if you wish to make money as an author of books that sell, is to find the fastest, least expensive, most effective way to move your books from your desktop to the hands of avidly reading humans. And I dearly hope you’re smart enough to use some of the cash I just saved you to contract with a very capable and empathetic substantive editor, like me, so that once you’re book is out there, word-of-mouth, the most important marketing tool in publishing, is on your side.
May you be clever enough to take a step toward your own success each day. Reach out to me if you have any questions at all, I’m happy to help.
