deep diver as we deep dive into breaking web news

We heard a lot of the latest breaking web news in today’s Yoast SEO News Webinar. In this one-hour session, there was a ton of information that should matter to every one of our readers. Here’s our distillation of their breaking web news and links to deeper dives.

Google Magi search engine

Google Magi may revolutionize internet search with a new AI-based engine powered by Google. The project, we learned in the Yoast new releases, seeks to anticipate user needs. It may kill link-based search engines. About 160 Google employees are working on it to be released in May 2023. The Verge has a good explanation of what’s known so far.

April 23rd, 2023 Google Product Review Guidance update

Google just finished updating its reviews guidance for those whose websites are heavily into reviewing products, services, and companies, and for Google Reviews. This update evaluates reviews of any topic that is reviewable.

  • Products, services, and any businesses.
  • Travel and destinations
  • Games, music, books, and all other media

If you include review content on your website, you should check your ranking. Moving forward, it will be necessary to post highly detailed and specific reviews. It might be necessary to post videos of you using a product. Google wants to see reviews that stand out from run-of-the-mill boiler-plate reviews that have no evidence of thoughtful evaluation.

Wanna order a pizza by prompting a bot? Looks like that’s up next. Auto GPT and Baby AGI will, we’re told, be able to accept your prompt to order a pizza, then find the best pizza, order it, pay for it (with your money), and get it delivered. All you do is ask.

And more AI tools, can anyone keep up??

Also in breaking web news, a new browser called Chrome WEB GPU is on the horizon. WEB GPU is a graphic-intensive browser.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) released a package of AI tools to help developers build chatbots and image generators. Everybody is in the game.

Databricks released Dolly2.0, billed as a free, open-source large language model. This could be something, or maybe not. Databricks explains. The deal is, they say, “…any organization can create, own, and customize powerful LLMs that can talk to people, without paying for API access or sharing data with third parties.” Yoast’s gurus think the human-generated data set could be more ethical, whatever that means.

WordPress has a bunch of AI-based plugins like Grammarly, for example. Yoast said today that WP is testing AI-powered assistance for other uses.

Behind breaking web news, there’s a dark cloud

Europe is questioning the legality of ChatGPT. Why? The platform needs to have more transparency, regulate underage users, and clarify how they claimed people’s data for training. Italy and at least eight other countries have banned or suspended ChatGPT for the moment, including Spain, France, Iran, and Russia.  In that vein, OpenAi is updating its terms of service, encouraging users to own up to using AI in their writing, art, and projects. Wonder how they will police that?

And speaking ad nauseam of AI, read this interesting bit about an art award bestowed on an AI-generated work. A photographer won a prize for his image. He turned down the prize, revealing that the work was AI-generated, and he wanted to open a conversation about that issue.

Final bits and pieces

Instagram now allows up to 5 links in your profile, so you can stop using LinkTree. If you use this platform to promote your books and creative work, go set your links.

Newsflash….Twitter, Inc is out of business. Gone. Now THAT”S breaking web news. The social media platform is now owned by a shell company called Xcorp, which is still Elan. But since Twitter is losing users at 8% per month, this is the beginning of then, and who really cares?

That’s all we’ve got for now. This kind of news greatly impacts our community of creators and side hustlers. Want more? You can look into attending Yoast’s next SEO news webinar if you’re interested in how to internationalize your web presence. OnText will attend and condense the info for you.
